Death benefits
All death benefits are paid at the Trustee's discretion. This means that it's up to the Trustee to decide who the benefits are paid to. However, your wishes would be taken into account, which is why it's so important that you make sure your nominations are up to date. Out of date nominations will mean that benefits can't be paid as quickly, and also that your benefits might not be paid as you would have liked. Please note that your nominations automatically become out of date if you get married or divorced or enter a civil partnership.
It’s quick and easy to update your beneficiaries information via Your Pension. Alternatively, you can find nomination forms in the Library.
Lump sum death benefits paid from the Scheme are counted towards the Lifetime Allowance. If the benefits (plus any other benefits you may have from other registered pension schemes elsewhere) exceed the Lifetime Allowance, your estate may be liable for tax on the excess.
